Fishing on Lake Baikal in summer or winter has always been the most fascinating niche of the Siberian lake after the nature of Lake Baikal, it is this niche of tourism that attracts a huge number of tourists, it is here that avid fishermen come to try their hand at Siberian soil.

So my article will be devoted to fishing on Lake Baikal in summer and winter, in this article I will share the places in which you “will be so cool that the client will forget about everything in the world” (from the movie “The Diamond Arm”).

I'll make a reservation right away, I'll talk about fishing on Lake Baikal purely from my own experience, I didn't get the chance to fish on the entire coast of the lake, so I'll tell you only about a few places that I visited and which I liked in terms of biting fish.

As for the Baikal fish, you can see it live in the Baikal Limnological Museum. If anyone does not know how to get to Lake Baikal, then we read a separate article.

Where to stay at Lake Baikal? The best tourist centers of the Maloye More and prices for accommodation.

What kind of fish can you catch on Lake Baikal?

Personally, I had to fish dozens of times on Lake Baikal and several dozen times I visited different shores, where my team caught a variety of fish, but personally I came across as evil pike, whitefish and omul, I could not catch anything else.

But what kind of fish you can catch on Lake Baikal, here is a list of the most accessible fish for fishing:

  • Pike, perch, soroga, lenok, dace are best caught from mid-December to late April.
  • Grayling is caught from late December to mid-April.
  • Whitefish, omul - caught after 20 January until mid-April
  • Sturgeon (prohibited for fishing!)
  • Taimen
  • Golomyanka
  • Burbot

It doesn't matter what kind of fishing on Lake Baikal, summer or winter, all avid fishermen unanimously insist that winter fishing will be much richer than summer fishing, in principle it is, all the main fish (whitefish, omul, grayling) comes out closer to the surface water from a depth approximately from the end of December to May.

As for the rest of the fish, such as the soroga, dace, pike, such fish can be caught in the Baikal summer in the coastal zone, which I have not been able to do to this day, apparently such a fish is afraid of me, but to catch a golomyanka, believe me, will not be labor.

Where is the best place to fish on Lake Baikal?

The main question of this article ‘where is it better to fish’ interests every tourist who comes to fish to the coast of Lake Baikal. For an ordinary fisherman, the most excellent places will be shallow coastal zones; as a rule, the entire main contingent of the Baikal water world lives in shallow water.

The most popular fishing spots on Lake Baikal, which I managed to visit, are located on the eastern coast of Lake Baikal. Baikal Sor: Posolsky Sor (I haven't been able to fish here yet), Proval Bay, Selenga River. Arangutai, Chivyrkuisky Bay. If you do not like to travel far from Irkutsk, then there are places closer, such as the Maloye More (the bay between Olkhon Island) or even closer - the 'squares' at the dam of the hydroelectric power station, a lot of people gather here in winter, but 'squares' is another story, yes and they do not belong to Baikal.

For those who do not know what the Baikal quarrels are, these are places with shallow water on the coast of Lake Baikal, often muddy or grassy, warm well in summer. Here you can find common fish (not particularly valuable species), such as bream, roach (soroga), perch, pike, and other breeds that are less familiar to you.

Fishing on Lake Baikal, Chivyrkuisky Bay in winter

This is a separate topic of the article about fishing on Lake Baikal, about which you can talk a lot, but in short I will tell you that Chivyrkuisky Bay attracts many professional fishermen from different parts of our planet, it is here that you can really go fishing, especially in winter.

The fishing season on the Chivyrkuisky Bay begins from mid-December to the end of April, during this period of time the ice thickness reaches 15 centimeters, which already allows walking on the ice without fear, while the central parts of Lake Baikal freeze only by mid-January.

For the information of fishermen tourists who arrived from remote areas and places of our planet, special fishing tours from many tour companies are organized here, the cost of such a tour ranges from 33,000 rubles and more, the duration of the tour is 5-7 days.

For this money, you will be met at the airport, taken to the place, fed, insured, given inventory, arranged a bath with a fish dinner and taken back to the plane, in general, everything is for you fishermen, if only you pay the money.

How to fish on Baikal?

I have only two devices, this is a spinning rod (2.7 meters) and a net that I bought in the Chinese market. It makes no sense to go into the details of these devices, since you can catch fish with an ordinary line and a stick, but at the expense of the net, you can officially forget about it, if you are caught with a net in the summer, then you will ‘scrape’ by no small fine.

What to fish for? Most often I caught on crustaceans - bormash (crustacean - amphipod), in winter they are very easy to catch. In the summer I caught fish with common bait, for example, earthworms. Well, here I told you a little information about fishing on Lake Baikal in summer and winter, of course, all the places that I described can be found on the Google or Yandex map, so finding the location will not be difficult for you.
